OUR LOCATION

THE SETTING...

Pian di Cascina is a renovated 17th century Umbrian farmstead, set in 20 acres of privately owned idyllic countryside.

We are an oasis of rest and relaxation, in the midst of olive groves, herb gardens, fig, walnut and oak trees. At an altitude of 600m asl, you can experience a moderate, more refreshing climate, even on the hottest summer's day.

The villa is 1.5 km from the village of Casa Castalda, which has a variety of shops including, a butchers, cheese shop, bakers and 2 grocery stores and a short walk from Carbonesca, which has 2 bars and a small shop.

The farm is nestled in the hills of Valfabbrica. The wonderful medieval town of Gubbio is only 25 minutes drive away and Assisi is a 15 km picturesque drive from the house.

The villa is ideally placed for several airports. The nearest one at Perugia is only half an hours drive away. Ancona is less than an hour away. Rimini, Rome, Bologna, Pisa and Florence airports are also ideally placed for visiting Pian Di Cascina.

ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS

At Pian di Cascina we do our best to respect the environment. Our water comes from our very own underground spring.

We only use low wattage or solar powered lighting.

We recycle all reusable material and we use the land to grow wheat, olives for oil, organic fruit and vegetables.

We hope you will enjoy the life here as much as we do.

RESTAURANTS

There are many restaurants in the area surrounding Pian Di Cascina and plenty of opportunities to sample the local cooking and produce.

There are three traditional Umbrian restaurants within 5-15 minutes of the house. The local restaurants serve typical Umbrian food such as: 'affettati' -plates of superb ham, salami and cheese, simple rustic pasta dishes with 'sugo' or truffles and roast meats and game.

The medieval town of Gubbio (25 mins drive away) has some of the best restaurants in Umbria and a lively night life. There is plenty of choice for all budgets and tastes. The speciality is rich truffle dishes made with local black and white truffles. Gubbio also has several bars and pubs, which are great fun and rather lively during the long summer evenings.

The nearby picturesque hill town of Spello has one of the top 18 cantina's (wine tasting cellars) in Italy. You can sample the best of Umbria's wine and produce in a lovely medieval courtyard setting. The tutored tastings are in Italian or English and each course is matched with a local wine.

There are many other fantastic restaurants in the area. When you arrive, we provide a welcome pack with details and directions to the many of the restaurants we recommend. We also suggest places of interest to visit along the way. You could spend weeks enjoying sampling all the local food and wine!

BARS

The local towns of Carbonesca and Casa Castalda both have several bars, where you can drink into the small hours with the locals.

You can walk to both of the bars in Carbonesca (15 mins walk), they are both typical Umbrian bars, with beer on tap and lively banter.

The local village of Casa Castalda (5 mins drive or 45 mins walk) has three bars in the centre of the town and a pizza-pub on the outskirts of town. The largest of the local bars (in the centre of town) is the hub of local activity, serves a variety of beers and aperitifs and is busy day and night.

ALSO WORTH KNOWING

You can easily travel to Rome and Florence from the villa by train. The nearest train station for Rome is Fossato Di Vico and trains take around 2 hours to get to central Rome - a typical return ticket costs around €22 per person off peak.
There is free parking at the station.

Florence can be reached from Perugia stations in around 2 hours - you arrive in central Florence and avoid all the crazy drivers and busy parking - train travel is a relaxing and inexpensive way to travel around Italy.

Just a week at Pian Di Cascina...
We suggest...

SUNDAYThe Caves of Frasassi- In our experience, it is best not to rush about on your first day –why not have a leisurely lie in, a relaxing breakfast and head off for the most spectacular caves most people will ever see? It is a short drive to the caves through mountainous countryside, when you arrive, book an afternoon tour in English and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants nearby – spend the afternoon touring the caves and marvel and the wonders of nature - head back to the villa for a relaxing swim or curl up with a book...

MONDAY -A day in Assisi –weekends are best avoided in summer – as Assisi gets very crowded and hot. Monday is usually a quieter day to enjoy the churches and cobbled streets of the most visited town in Italy. A must see is the basilica of San Francesco, Assisi’s patron saint – there are 2 churches, the upper, lower and a crypt. Walk back up from the church to the town square and you can reward yourself with a great gelato- in the town square. If you don’t fancy a restaurant lunch – we suggest buying filled rolls and a picnic at one of the wonderful delis in the narrow side streets of the main square. If you are feeling energetic, walk up to the Rocca Maggiore were you can enjoy a picnic lunch with a view!

TUESDAY-A day in the local town of Gubbio– Tuesday is market day in Gubbio and a great time to visit. Gubbio is a wonderfully preserved medieval walled town that is authentic and still as populated by local inhabitants (not tourists) today as it was in the past. Barter with the local’s at the market – try a Panini or porcetta for breakfast or brunch, then head up from the piazza to the palazzo and the fabulous views of the cotta roofs and medieval buildings – Gubbio is often referred to as the Siena of Umbria. From the palazzo and the piazza grande –you can head further upwards and see the duomo.
Break for lunch –there are several good restaurant in Gubbio – then take the Funavia (cable car) to the top of Monte Ignio for a coffee and see the basilica and for the best views of Gubbio – walk back down the road to the medieval centre.

WEDNESDAY -A day in Perugia – There is much to do and see in Perugia – don’t exhaust yourself trying to do everything. If it is too hot or not so good weather, explore the wonderful museums and galleries – otherwise, Perugia is best seen on foot - take the brand new railway up to the centre of the city and walk around -see some of the the churches, medieval buildings – have lunchin one of the many good restaurants. In afternoon why not stroll down the Corso Cavour and see Umbria’s biggest church-If you are near the Piazza Italia around sixish, order an aperitivo at one of the outside tables at The Hotel Brufani, Perugia’s only five star hotel. Here you can enjoy great views, the perfect spot for watching the evening ‘passeggiata’ and complimentary nibbles that accompany your drink. (A bit on the pricey side-but a lovely Perugian experience) Complete your day with a stroll back along the Corso Vannuci –early evening is the best time to people watch, so take your time and enjoy the spectacle.
As you pass through Valfabbrica on your way back from Perugia -when you are almost back to the villa – there is a great restaurant – it is well worth stopping for supper here!

THURSDAY-An afternoon in Spello – Spello is one of our favourite villages. It has beautiful window boxes and flower gardens throughout the summer and offers the tourist a view of traditional village life – Spello is not a whole day’s worth of visiting unless you are really keen – so lounge around at the pool, or take a walk to one of our local villages in the morning and see Spello in the late afternoon, have an aperativo at one of the outdoor bars or go for a wine tasting at the enotecca and enjoy supper at La Cantina – you won’t regret it.

FRIDAY -A picnic in the Monte Cucco National Park – a wonderful antidote to traditional sightseeing is a visit to the national park – you can drive to almost the top of Monte Cucco – if you are keen to walk you can also walk up it – otherwise you can simply park up, admire fantastic views and watch the hang gliders and para gliders take off (weather conditions permitting) – there are cattle roaming free, wild horses and views that will knock your socks off – you can take a picnic and while away the hours – or sample a plate of antipasti and pasta at one of the park restaurants – there are walks to suit most abilities if you fancy a stroll.

Full directions and visiting notes along with restaurant recommendations are provided in our guest book.
